Sadly, just halfway through the first month of 2018 and our nation’s Law Enforcement community has seen the #lineofduty shooting deaths of 3 officers. Our thoughts and condolences are with the families of these officers and their Blue Families at the
Pierce County Sheriff’s Department in WA, York County Sheriff’s Office in SC and the U.S. Marshals Service, Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force, Erie

Just before midnight on Saturday, January 7th, Deputy Sheriff Daniel McCartney of the Pierce County WA Sheriff’s Department, was shot & killed after responding to a home invasion at a known “drug house.” Deputy McCartney was first on scene & became engaged in a foot pursuit with the suspect who opened fire on him, striking him in the neck above his protective vest. He was rushed to the hospital & passed away at 2:00am. That suspect died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot & the second suspect was arrested at the scene & charged with first degree murder.

Deputy Daniel McCartney, age 34, was a veteran of the United States Navy. A nine year veteran of law enforcement, he served the last 3 years with the Pierce County Sheriff’s and prior to that for 6 years with the Hoquiam Police Department. He is survived by his wife of 13 years and his three young sons.

On Monday, January 15th, Deputies with the York County SC Sheriff’s responded to a domestic disturbance where a man had attacked his wife before fleeing into a wooded area near his home. During the search to apprehend him, the suspect ambushed a canine handler – wounding him. He also shot at a law enforcement helicopter. The department SWAT team responded to continue the search. The suspect set up a second ambush shooting Detective Doty and 2 other members of the SWAT team. Detective Doty was flown to a hospital in Charlotte, NC where he died on January 17th.

Detective Mike Doty, age 37, had served the York County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years – along with his twin brother Chris. Detective Doty began working at the sheriff’s office in 2006. He was an investigator with the York County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit and the Law Enforcement Officer Narcan (LEON) Program coordinator. He was also a member of the YCSO SWAT Entry Team and an Associate Advisor for the York County Explorer Post 1786.

*************
Early this morning, January 18th Deputy U.S. Marshal Christopher Hill was shot and killed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania while attempting to serve an arrest warrant with other members of the Middle Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force.

The task force had located a woman, at a residence, who was wanted for making terroristic threats, at approximately 6:30 a.m. As they attempted to take the woman into custody a man inside the home opened fire on them, striking Deputy Marshal Hill and two local task force officers. One of the wounded officers was able to return fire and killed the subject. Deputy Marshal Hill was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Deputy Marshal Hill, age 37, was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the United States Marshals Service for 11 years. Hill was a member of a highly-trained special operations group and led a team during the manhunt for Eric Frein, who ambushed two Pennsylvania troopers at a police barracks in 2014 and then led officers on a 48-day manhunt through rugged terrain.

Deputy Marshal Christopher Hill is survived by his wife and two young children.

REST IN PEACE TO OUR BROTHERS, GONE TOO SOON. They served each day to protect their communities. The legacy of their brave commitment will not be forgotten.
