The deadline is fast approaching. To participate you need to apply by April 30.

We are recruiting participants for the next Senior Volunteer Patrol Academy. The academy is scheduled for late summer of 2018.

The Senior Volunteer Patrol (SVP) draws on the experience and mature judgment of members that are 50 years and older. The patrol supports us by increasing law enforcement services to the community. Volunteer patrol functions include:
• Neighborhood patrols
• Traffic control
• Mobile Police Command Post operation
• Handicapped violation enforcement
• Safety Center tours
• Visits and calls to housebound seniors (YANA)
• Community presentations
• Assistance at special events

To begin, volunteer patrol members attend a 95-hour academy followed by 60 hours of “on the job training.” During the academy participants receive training in traffic control, safety, first aid and CPR, ethics, radio communications, traffic citations, crime prevention and hands-on driving safety. After training, each patrol member contributes a minimum of 28 hours per month.

Applicants are required to meet the following requirements:
• Be at least 50 years of age
• Be a U.S. citizen
• Possess a valid California Driver’s License
• Have proof of auto insurance
• Have no felony convictions
• Be in good physical condition
• Pass a background investigation and polygraph

Prospective members must submit an application by April 30. Applicants will next complete a questionnaire and an interview will be scheduled. To apply for the SVP Academy, call the SVP office at 760-931-2214 or email don.whisnant@carlsbadca.gov.

Be part of the solution – National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Remove expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications from your home.

Saturday – April 28 – 10 am through 2 pm
Scripps Coastal Medical Center – 2176 Salk Ave

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. For more locations www.takebackday.dea.gov
