Detectives Seeking Information on Deceased Person Found in Flood Control Channel

On Saturday, January 13, 2018 at approximately 1:26 p.m., Chino Police Officers responded to the 15300 block of Central Avenue after receiving a call from a person who saw what they believed to be a dead body in the flood control channel.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a deceased person that was covered with debris from the recent storm. A San Bernardino County Coroner Investigator and Chino Police Department Detectives responded to the scene.

At this time, the identity of the person is unknown. No obvious signs of foul play were seen. The Coroner’s Office will attempt to identify the deceased and notify the next of kin. Further investigation will be conducted once the deceased is identified by the Coroner.

California Department of Corrections notified Chino PD that Garrett was located and taken into custody by their Investigators in Encinitas, CA.

**UPDATE 4:25 a.m.**

The Chino Police Department can confirm that the escapee is no longer in the immediate vicinity. Investigative leads are being followed to apprehend the suspect. The California Institute for Men is the lead, handling the investigation and further notices to the public. Media outlets may contact the CDCR for additional information.

California Institute for Men (CIM) Prison Escape

According to CIM, there has been a confirmed escape from the Chino Men’s State Prison.

The escapee, Michael Garrett, is described as a white male, 33 years of age, 5’10, and weighs approximately, 197 lbs.

If you see Michael Garrett do not approach him and call 911 immediately. If you see or hear anything suspicious related to this incident, call 911 immediately.

UPDATE: Michael was in custody for grand theft auto and felony evading.

***TRAFFIC ADVISORY***

Over the next few days the expected rainfall for Chino is approximately 2″ with the most significant rainfall taking place tomorrow (Tuesday). Wind gusts are also in the forecast.

With that there is a risk of road hazards in some areas of the city. Please take extra precaution and plan ahead for extra travel time.

PD, City and CalTrans personnel are working together in preparation for any issues that may arise as a result of the inclement weather.
