On December 31, 2017, two officers with the Delano Police Department were investigating a suspicious vehicle parked within the alleyway of the 2200 block of Norwalk Street. As the officers approached on foot, the suspect vehicle accelerated towards one of the officers. Fearing for his safety, the officer fired his duty firearm, striking the driver. The driver succumbed to his injuries. A passenger within the vehicle fled into a nearby home. After about an hour of negotiations, the passenger exited the home and was eventually taken into custody. The two officers are being placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is routine in officer involved shootings. The case is being investigated by the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
