Today we celebrated the retirement of Lieutenant Andy Vuncanon. Vuncanon began his law enforcement career in 1986 with the Long Beach Police Department as a civilian employee assigned to the community relations unit. Vuncanon graduated from the Rio Hondo Police Academy Class 97. He was hired by the Montebello Police Department on April 5, 1990. Vuncanon was assigned to the patrol unit and quickly earned a reputation as being a proactive officer and a tenacious investigator.

In 1994, Vuncanon was promoted to senior police officer and became a field training officer. His hard work earned him a position on the Montebello Anti Gang Unit as well as the bicycle unit.

In 1995, Vuncanon was transferred to the intelligence unit and worked in that assignment as a detective until 2006. Vuncanon rotated back to the patrol unit and served as a corporal and field training officer. In 2007, he moved to the Narcotics Unit until his promotion to sergeant in 2008.

Vuncanon worked as a patrol sergeant and his vast expertise in investigations made him a logical choice to return to the narcotics unit as a sergeant. In 2010, Vuncanon was promoted to Lieutenant. he then worked as a watch commander, investigations lieutenant and administrative lieutenant.

Lt. Vuncanon also had a passion for our reserve officer program and the police explorer program. Under his command both units maintained a high level of excellence.

Lt. Vuncanon was the 2002 Montebello Officer of the Year and was awarded numerous commendation from local, state and federal agencies. He was also awarded the Montebello Police Department medal of merit in 1997 and 2004. in 2012, he was awarded a career achievement award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Lt. Vuncanon takes with him 28 years of institutional knowledge and decades of service to the residents of Montebello. All your family at the Montebello Police Department wish you a long and healthy retirement.

This past holiday season, a group of generous residents of Montebello donated 40 hams to the police department. The residents asked that we hand out the hams to local families. Several of the hams were given out by officers while driving around town. Hams were also given during our recent DUI checkpoint.

Everyone was very appreciative of the kind gesture. The officers of the Montebello Police Department would like to thank the generous donors and we hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday.

Happy New Year!
