This week-long event is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. Throughout the week we will be highlighting members of our incredible Police Communications team.

911 Dispatcher Sophia Bengel has worked for our Police Communications Team for 1.5 years. Sophia is another rising star on our team. When she isn’t taking 911 calls she is working hard at obtaining a degree in Marketing. She is looking to transfer to USD or SDSU very soon. In addition to wanting to help people, Sophia wanted to be a dispatcher with SDPD because of the vast opportunities our department has to offer.

The San Diego Police Department would like to say “Thank You,” to Sophia and our entire Police Communications Team for their dedication and service to us and our community who we so proudly serve.

Today we remember the life of fallen #SDPD Officer Michael Anaya. EOW:04/11/1979.

On March 21st, 1979, Officer Michael Anaya was shot and killed after a man high on PCP gained control of his weapon. Officer Anaya had responded to a call of a man attacking his family with a knife. During a struggle the suspect gained control of Officer Anaya’s weapon and shot him. He then shot and killed himself. Officer Anaya was paralyzed from the neck down until he succumbed to his injuries three weeks later.

Patrolman Anaya had served with the agency for nine months.

Please take a moment to honor him and the ultimate sacrifice he made protecting the community he so proudly served. #NeverForget
