Over the last few years, the Union City Police Department has worked diligently to put all patrol officers, sergeants, and public service officers though Crisis Intervention Training. The week long course is designed to educate law enforcement officers to interact with individuals with a mental illness and improves the safety of patrol officers, mental health consumers, their family members, and all the members of our community. The training aims to reduce the stigma of mental illness and redirects the need for involvement with the criminal justice system to the mental health care system.

Patrol officers respond to calls involving people with mental illness regularly. Any officer can attest that these type of calls are not routine and can evolve and escalate quickly. In 2017, UCPD officers responded to 256 calls that involved people with mental illness. 95% of those calls were handled peacefully with no use of force by officers. Officers with Crisis Intervention Training have displayed excellent competency, compassion, restraint, and effective use of de-escalation. Crisis Intervention Training has helped our officers and our community tremendously.

Traffic Officer Silva is raising money for the 2018 Fallen Officer Unity Tour. The Fallen Officer Unity Tour is a bicycle ride from Newark, NJ to Washington D.C. that brings public awareness to officers who were killed on duty. The first ride happened in 1997 with 18 original riders. In 2016, there were over 2000 riders from across the nation, and they donated over 2 million dollars to the Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Fund. This year, Officer Silva and Officer Vasicek will be part of the support team and will ride their police motorcycles in a security and ecort role. All members of the support team raise money just like the bicycle riders. The Fallen Officer Unity Tour leaves Newark, NJ on 5/9 and arrives in Washington D.C. on 5/12. Click on the link to learn more about the ride and to support Officer Silva’s fundraising efforts.

Thank you!!!

California voter approved Proposition 64 and SB 94 changed numerous cannabis laws that took effect on January 1, 2018. There has been a lot of talk about the laws going into effect on mainstream media and social media. The hype can be confusing AND misleading. Often when people hear the word “recreational use”, there is an assumption that people will now be free to smoke or ingest cannabis anywhere they’d like. There are actually many restrictions within the cannabis laws. It gets confusing to understand, even for law enforcement. Please click on the attached link to see a very simplified version of what is legal and what is not legal when it comes to cannabis use, possession, sales, and cultivation.
