Today we said goodbye to retired TFPD Lieutenant Bill “Stony” Stonemets. Bill was a true legend of our organization as he exemplified honor, commitment and public service for well over 50 years. Stony left a lasting impact on everyone he worked with and the thousands and thousands of people he helped during the past five decades.

Bill’s passing is a huge loss for our department, our City family and our community. Stony is believed to be the longest serving member in our Department’s history as he worked for the TFPD in some way for over 52 years. Stony starting working for the TFPD as a radio dispatcher in March of 1965 and was promoted to supervise the records division in 1968. He obtained his basic police officer certification in 1977 and was promoted to Lieutenant in May of 1979.

Stony is actually unique in that he retired twice with the TFPD. He first retired in 1995 after serving for 30 years, but he quickly returned to work within a few weeks and he continued to work until February of 2006. After he retired the second time, he continued to serve at the TFPD as the parking ticket hearing officer for twelve additional years until the time of his death. Bill is survived by his four children, nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and his wife, Letha, his partner in life for the past 63 years.
