Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention

It’s freezing cold and residents increasingly will want to warm up their vehicles, but leave them unoccupied.

The Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit advises there are steps you can take to reduce the chance your vehicle being stolen:

• Do not leave your vehicle running and unattended.
• Keep your vehicle locked at all times, even while driving.
• Store keys in a safe spot.
• Do not leave a spare key inside your vehicle.
• Lock the door leading to your garage.
• Look around, be aware of your surroundings, especially in garages, parking lots and gas stations.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call the police non-emergency number at 309-820-8888. Try to provide as much information as possible: individual descriptions, method of travel, and the last direction of travel etc.

Observing these tips can help keep your vehicle in your possession!
