Thank You Area Youth

Recently some of our youngest members of our community reached out with cards and letters which in part read, “Thank you for protecting all of us. You spend most of your time sacrificing for us. Thank you for making time for us, and living in danger for all.”

A special thanks to all the children and staff at The Hub and the children pictured below who delivered the thank you banner.

Picture below from left to right, Sgt. Veerman, Officers Lanphear and Fosdick.

Distracted Driving

April is national Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to remind motorists that if they drive with a phone in one hand, they can expect a ticket in the other.

With traffic fatalities on the rise in Illinois and across the country, BPD is committed to reducing easily preventable crashes caused by distractions such as texting or talking on a cellphone.

Texting while driving distracts the driver visually, manually and cognitively, putting everyone on the road at risk. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving blind at 55 mph for the length of an entire football field.

Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones across Bloomington as part of the April 16-30 distracted driving enforcement. BPD may be ticketing drivers who text or use their cellphones while driving.

Not giving driving your full attention can have deadly consequences. Don’t let one text or call wreck it all: Drop It and Drive!

The Illinois Drop It and Drive program is funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by IDOT.

The mission of the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) is to work in partnership with the citizens of Bloomington to enforce the laws and to enhance the quality of life in our community.

BPD will continue to take a strong stance in the protection of our witnesses and victims of crime in our community. Witness intimidation either in person or through electronic means is illegal and obstructs investigations.
