Hammond police have taken into custody a suspect, an 18-year-old white male from Hammond, believed to be involved in a January 6th homicide.

That night, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Hammond Police responded to an alley in the 6700 block of New Jersey in reference to a person lying on the ground. Upon arrival, officers located a black male laying just outside of a vehicle. The vehicle was determined to be stolen from Calumet City. Hammond Fire Department was notified and transported the male to Methodist Hospital in Gary where he was pronounced dead. The male was found to have a gunshot wound to his chest. The male was identified as 20-year-old Shermane Sargent from East Chicago.

Hammond detectives investigated and tracked down the male who they believe fled from the area of the crime. This male was located in Goodland, Indiana and was apprehended without incident by Hammond Police detectives in cooperation with the Indiana State police, the FBI GRIT task force, and other assisting law enforcement agencies.

Charges are expected to be presented to the lake county prosecutors office this week.

We have received at least 6 complaints about a “NIPSCO” phone scam in the last two days. The suspects are calling individuals stating that they are from NIPSCO. Recently, these suspects appear to be using some type of phone app that allows them to spoof an actual NIPSCO phone number. This means that when they call, the number that shows up on the victims caller ID will show the call as a legit NIPSCO phone number. The victim is advised that they are facing disconnection if they do not pay immediately. The victim is then directed to call another subject at a phone number that is different from the one on the caller ID. When they call this number, the person answering will identify himself/herself as another NIPSCO employee and direct the victim to purchase some type of prepaid gift card or debit card from a store such as CVS or Walgreen’s and to deposit cash on the card account, in the amount of the alleged delinquent payment. The victim is then directed to call the same suspect and give him/her the card information, at which time the suspect will withdraw the money that was deposited.

When the number on the caller ID is called, an actual NIPSCO employee will answer and, if asked, will advise the victim that they are being scammed and that NIPSCO never conducts business in this fashion.

Please share this post and advise friends and family about this scam. For more info on this subject from NIPSCO click link below..
