During this evening’s meeting of the City of Lawrence Indiana Common Council, the Council officially recognized and commended LPD Officer John Hays and Detective Stacy Hinshaw for one of their recent outstanding efforts.

On January 7th, Officer Hays responded to the area of E 71st St & Lee Rd, to investigate the report of an injured dog in the woods there. A bicyclist had observed the dog, who appeared to be injured and distressed, about 100 yards into the woods. Officer Hays located the frigid dog, gently let the dog become acquainted and familiar with him, then carried the dog to Officer Hays’ vehicle to start warming him.

Officer Hays contacted Detective Stacy Hinshaw, well-known to all at LPD as avid pet advocate, who researched and located the dog’s owners, which was verified once the dog’s embedded ownership chip was scanned.

Officer Hays and Detective Hinsahw’s efforts led to the reuniting of Duke with his grateful owners, who indicated he had gone missing for the previous two days.

Duke’s owners attended the Council meeting personally, along with Duke, to recognize and commend Officer Hays and Detective Hinshaw for their efforts. Duke is well on his way to recovery from a leg injury that occurred while he had been missing.

Thank you to the Lawrence Common Council (especially Councilor Robert Jones, Jr and Council President Lisa Chavis) for officially recognizing Officer Hays and Detective Hinshaw, and to Duke’s owners, Summer and Caitlyn (hope we spelled correctly), for attending to recognize Officer Hays and Det Hinshaw as well. We’re glad Duke is on his way to recovery.

Well Done Officer Hays, and Detective Hinshaw!!!
