WPD NRT Arrest Two on Main Street for Drug Offenses

On January 18, 2018 a Worcester Police Supervisor along with several other NRT officers were working in the area of the 500 to 600 block of Main Street. The officers were working in plain clothes while conducting surveillance an unmarked police vehicles. There were several plain clothes NRT officers scattered throughout the area.

The officers were there as a result of a continuous effort to address complaints from citizens, business owners and from community leaders with regard to illegal drug activity, littering, disorderly persons, loitering, and other quality of life issues.

At approximately 10:20 AM, the supervisor’s attention was drawn to a male, later identified as Carlos Roman, 29-years-old of 18 Penn Avenue. Mr. Roman was observed to be walking around in the area with no clear destination to go to. At one point Mr. Roman was in the company of three other males. The group of four males began to walk north on Main Street. In the area of Federal Street and Main Street, the supervisor observed a male, later identified as Eric Larson, 55-years-old of 44 Temple Street, approach the group and engage in conversation.

Mr. Roman was observed looking around in all directions. Mr. Larson was seen handing Mr. Roman some paper currency. Mr. Roman was then seen removing an object from his mouth and placing it in Mr. Larson’s hand. It was obvious to the officer that he had just witnesses a street level drug transaction take place.

After the transaction the two men parted. Mr. Larson began walking south on Main Street while Mr. Roman walked north. Assisting NRT officers stopped Mr. Larson by the Salvation Army located by 640 Main Street.

A search of Mr. Larson discovered a small clear knotted baggie that contained crack cocaine. The NRT supervisor was informed of the discovery.

At this time Mr. Roman was asked to stop in front of City Hall. Initially Mr. Roman did not comply and began to swallow something. Once he finished swallowing he stopped.

Mr. Roman was placed under arrest and charged with Distribution of Class B Substance. A search of Mr. Roman produced 3 cellphones and $55.00 in cash.

Both men were transported to police headquarters for processing without incident.

WPD Alcohol Enforcement Unit Attempts to Curb Underage Drinking

Worcester, MA (January 17, 2018) – The Worcester Police Alcohol Enforcement Unit will be enhancing its efforts to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors and the purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages to minors by conducting a number of programs over the course of the next year. The Alcohol Enforcement Unit will also target establishments that over serve patrons.

The goal is to use enforcement practices that will help to prevent access to alcohol by minors and to ensure that alcohol establishments are following proper laws, regulations and procedures with regard to serving age appropriate patrons.

Throughout the year, members of the Worcester Police Alcohol Enforcement Unit will be conducting various underage alcohol compliance stings and surveillance activities. The Alcohol Enforcement Unit expects business establishments to adhere to the laws of the commonwealth and watch for fake IDs and minors attempting to purchase alcohol.

According to the Center for Disease Control, underage drinking is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.

Local Teen Arrested for Making Threats against Central MA Academy

On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at approximately 1:00 PM, Worcester Police responded to Central MA Academy, located at Rockdale Street, for a report of a student that was making threats against the school.

Upon the officers arrival they spoke with the director of the school. Officers were told that the administration had discovered that one of their students had posted threatening messages against the school. The threats were posted on the suspect’s Facebook page which has since been removed.

The threats came from a student identified as Nathaniel Archeval, an 18-years-old Worcester resident. Mr. Archeval is a known member of a local gang within the city.

The threats caused anxiety and fear to school staff members.

On Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at approximately 11:50 AM, Worcester police located Mr. Archeval in a Pattison Street apartment and placed him under arrest without incident. A search of Mr. Archeval produced no weapons.

Mr. Archeval was charged with Threat to Hijack or Disruption of School.

Mr. Archeval was transported to police headquarters for processing and then transported to the Worcester County District Court House for an afternoon arraignment.

Male Suspect Arrested after Robbing Female of Her Purse at Knife Point

On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at approximately 9:15 AM, Worcester Police responded to 27 Mount Vernon Street for a reported Larceny. Upon the officers arrival they met with a 35-year-old female victim. According to the victim, she was exiting the Cantihno Do Brazil Market located at 108 Belmont Street when she was approached by a male asking her for money. The victim stated that she had no money to give and attempted to walk away. The male asked again but this time he was basically demanding it from her. The female refused again. At this time the suspect pushed her against the wall of Duncan Donuts, produced a knife and demanded her purse. The suspect took the purse and began to walk up Belmont Street. The victim told the officers that she began to follow the suspect onto Hooper Street and eventually onto Mount Vernon Street. The male was seen entering 27 Mount Vernon Street. Once inside she called the police.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male with light complexion, 5’10”, wearing a red hat, black jacket, blue pants and black shoes.

Officers entered the building and spoke with the property manager. Officers were given access to the building security cameras for review. Officers were able to identify the apartment that the suspect had entered. After viewing the footage the officers began to walk towards the apartment when they encountered a male that matched the suspect description from the security footage.

The male was identified as Fernando Ayala, 31-years-old of 33 Beacon Street.

Officers provided the victim an opportunity to take a look at Mr. Ayala and see if this was the male that took her purse. The victim identified him as the male that robbed her.

Mr. Ayala was placed under arrest without incident and charged with Armed Robbery.

Officers at the scene eventually located evidence and the victim’s purse inside the building.

This investigation remains active.

Pleasant Street Neighbor Dispute Ends with One Male Stabbed in Chest

On Sunday, January 14, 2018, at approximately 12:26 AM, Worcester police responded to 49 Pleasant Street for a reported stabbing. Upon the officers arrival they observed blood in the common hallway. Officers observed a door to one of the apartments slightly ajar. Officers could see in plain view that there was blood on the floor inside the apartment. Officers entered the apartment and discovered a 31-year-old male standing by the kitchen sink. The victim was bleeding from a single stab wound to the chest.

Officers at the scene began to treat the victim until Worcester EMS arrived. The victim was in and out of consciousness. The victim was stabilized and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The victim was subsequently listed in good condition.

Investigators were called to the scene to speak with witnesses. Members of the Crime Scene Unit arrived and processed evidence.

Information was obtained that the victim was in an argument with his neighbor, later identified as Hiram Irizarry, Jr., 30-years-old of 49 Pleasant Street. Officers went to the suspect’s apartment and located him inside. Mr. Irizarry was placed under arrest without incident and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Investigators went to the hospital and met with the victim. Investigators asked the victim to describe the events leading up to the stabbing but he provided little information and was basically uncooperative.

This investigation is ongoing; Mr. Irizarry will be arraigned on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the Worcester County District Courthouse.

The event was held at the Quisigamond Community College. State wide and local politicians shared the event with many community leaders to honor MLK’s life and legacy.
