Over the past week, there have been several incidents of larceny from vehicles and burglary to unlocked garages in the Lakeview area. It appears that these crimes are being committed in the early morning hours from approximately 3 am to 6 am. Several of these incidents have involved unlocked/open garages and unlocked vehicles.

We are asking for the assistance of all Battle Creek residents. Please ensure that your vehicles are locked, and all valuables are removed and brought into the house overnight. Also, please check that your garage doors are closed and all service doors leading into your garage are securely locked.

We will provide further information on these incidents as it becomes available.

If you have any information in regards to these crimes or you would like to report a crime, please contact the Battle Creek Police at 269-781-0911.

Our partners at CALHOUN COUNTY 911 currently participate in a national program called SMART911. This system helps emergency responders in providing faster, more effective, and more comprehensive service to their communities. Residents that sign up for the program are able to create a profile that contains vital information for first responders. This information includes the names of family within your household, emergency contacts, medical conditions, pet information, house floor plans, and much more. As society has transitioned away from the single house phone to several cellular phone numbers within one household, identifying information for dispatch has been lost. This program puts that critical information back in the hands of our dispatchers and first responders.

Here’s an example of how the program could serve you.

Dispatch receives a 911 hang up call from a cell phone that has not been registered in SMART911. The dispatcher is unable to link that phone to a name or address, and is forced to send an officer to check the immediate area that cell towers last placed the phone. The size of the area could vary from several hundred feet to several miles. The responding officer then checks that area aimlessly and would likely clear from the call without ever locating the caller.

Dispatch receives a 911 hang up call from a cell phone that has been registered in SMART911. The dispatcher immediately identifies the phone number as belonging to Joe Citizen at 123 Cornflake St. and dispatches police to that location. As officers respond, the dispatcher also identifies information within the SMART911 profile that Joe Citizen has a medical condition with a history of seizures. The dispatcher then calls for an ambulance to respond as well. As officers arrive on scene, they have no answer at the door but find Joe Citizen’s car parked in the driveway. The dispatcher then finds the garage door code listed in the profile and provides it to the officers on scene. As police enter the home, they find Mr. Citizen unconscious on the floor and bring medical personnel, who are already on scene, inside to treat him.
The information that is made available through SMART911 enables a faster, more efficient response in situations where minutes matter. Please take the time to check it out at: www.smart911.com
