Press Release: Bank Robber Arrested

Early this morning, Dennis Burger was located and taken into custody without incident near 28th St SE and Eastern Av SE by Grand Rapids Police Detectives. He is currently at the Kent County Correctional Facility awaiting arraignment. GRPD and Macatawa Bank would like to thank the community for all of your help in swiftly identifying and apprehending Mr. Burger.

A two-count felony warrant for Bank Robbery was issued today for the most recent Macatawa Bank Robberies on January 13 (18-003419) and January 16 (18-4095), 2018. Dennis Lee Burger 8/10/65 has been identified as the suspect in both robberies, but his whereabouts are currently unknown. He is known to frequent the downtown Grand Rapids area and has recently been seen in a gray Kia Soul as well as a burgundy 4-door sedan.

Burger is described as a w/m, 6’2”/210 lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes. In both robberies, Burger wore glasses and had a mustache. Press Release: Suspect Sketch Leads to Arrest of CSC Suspect

Grand Rapids, MI (January 18, 2018, 1:00 p.m.)

Update: Suspect Arrested

The Grand Rapids Police Detectives, in conjunction with the US Marshall Team, arrested Xavier Jajuan Davis 6/8/86, earlier this week in connection with this case. Following the release of the attached sketch of the suspect, tips came in identifying Davis as the suspect. Investigators were able to gather enough probable cause for a warrant which was issued for 2 counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st degree. An undercover operation at the Grand Rapids bus terminal led to Davis’ capture without incident.

Davis was arraigned yesterday in the 61st District Court, and his next scheduled court date is 1/30/18 for a probable cause hearing. Davis was arraigned on these charges with a bond set at $250,000.

Throughout the investigation detectives were able to link Davis to an unrelated 2017 Criminal Sexual Conduct case. The unrelated case took place on 10/25/2017 at 303 Monroe Ave NW. A warrant was issued for Attempt Criminal Sexual Conduct, and Davis was arraigned on this additional charge with a bond set at $150,000.

The Grand Rapids Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in generating leads to the identity of the suspect in the composite sketch. The sketch was created as part of a CSC 1st degree investigation.

The incident occurred at approximately 0130 hours on 12/28/2017 in the 4200 block of Oak Park Dr SE. During the incident, the B/M suspect pointed a handgun at the female victim and sexually assaulted her. The B/M suspect then fled on foot.

The suspect is described as being a B/M, 21-23 years old, 6’, 160 pounds, with short black hair (Approximately 1” long), brown eyes, and medium complexion. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a dark colored jacket with the hood pulled up, blue jeans, and unknown colored shoes, possibly a larger size Nike. The handgun was described as being a larger framed black semiautomatic.

Press Release: Montgomery Death Investigation Update

Update: The Kent County Medical Examiner has determined that the deaths of King Talbert and Germaine Brown were homicides by gunshot wounds.

Chief Rahinsky, along with the Detective Bureau Command Staff, held a 4:00 p.m. press conference discussing our continuing investigative efforts and asking the public for assistance in leads regarding this case.

Update: The second victim from the Montgomery St. SE death investigation died last night from his injuries.

It has been confirmed that Two year old King Talbert and 46 year old Germaine Brown were the victim’s found in the residence in the 200 block of Montgomery St SE. Both victims did sustain injury from an apparent gunshot wound. Germaine Brown was found to be deceased at the scene however King Talbert was transported to DeVos children’s hospital where he survived until approximately 11:30 p.m. after every effort was made to save his life. It was determined that Germaine Brown resided at the home on Montgomery St. SE and that King Talbert, whom she was baby-sitting, was her grandson.

An autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause and manner of death for the victims, although it appears as if both had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.

The Grand Rapids Police Department Major Case Team Investigators worked through the night on this case, and we will continue to work relentlessly to bring justice for the victims and the family.

“Every life is precious, and every death is devastating,” said Captain Kurt Vanderkooi of the Investigations Bureau. “When we have the death of a child involved, in raises the emotional level of the family, members of the police department, and the community as a whole. We are committed to finding answers in this case and locating whoever was involved in the death of King and Germaine.”

The Grand Rapids Police Major Case Team Detectives are currently involved in a death investigation at a residence near Montgomery St SE and Jefferson Av SE following a medical 911 call to dispatch.

At approximately 2:50 p.m., an “ECHO” level medical call (potentially life threatening) came in reporting two victims unconscious at the residence. Police, Fire, and medical units responded and found an adult female and a child inside the home, both suffering from physical injuries. Medical units pronounced the adult dead at the scene and the child was transported to an area hospital where the condition is currently listed as critical.

The GRPD Forensic Services Unit responded to the scene as investigators continue to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. To protect the privacy of the family, identifications will not be released until proper notifications can be made to the family.

An autopsy will likely be performed in the morning.

Press Release: GRPD to Host Inaugural Condensed Citizens Police Academy

The Grand Rapids Police Department will host a condensed version of its annual Citizens Police Academy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, January 19 at police headquarters, 1 Monroe Cn NW, Grand Rapids. This event is part of GRPD’s ongoing efforts to strengthen community and police relations through dialogue.

The media is invited to attend for opening remarks at this inaugural event. The six-hour academy will give community stakeholders an opportunity to better understand the inner workings of the department. Topics that will be covered include:

*The Internal Affairs Unit
*Use of Force
*Traffic Stops
*Recruiting and Hiring
*Crime Mapping

Chief David Rahinsky said the condensed academy would not take the place of GRPD’s long-standing 10-week Citizens Police Academy. Instead, he said, he hoped it would increase dialogue with a greater number of community partners.

“As a department, we are committed to transparency, accountability and enhancing public trust,” Chief Rahinsky said. “Providing opportunities for more community members to experience the Citizens Police Academy makes us a better agency and a stronger community. “

Grand Rapids Police Department, in conjunction with the FBI Fugitive Task Force, took a 2017 Homicide suspect into custody this afternoon in the 400 block of Webster St NW. The suspect has been identified as Kevin Ezell 04/13/89. The warrant that he was arrested on includes charges of Homicide-Open Murder and a Felony Firearm weapons offense. A future court date has not yet been determined.

The Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating a shooting death that occurred on the 100 block of Sheldon Av SE. Officers were called to the scene at 4:06 pm. When they arrived the officers located a 28 year old deceased male.

Investigators are looking into what occurred prior to the 9-1-1 call. The victim will be identified pending notification of the next of kin.

“This is a very unfortunate situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family. Due to the lack of information available, we are requesting that if anyone knows what happened to please call the police.” – Sgt Terry Dixon
