On Mon., an EP resident found Buddy, a 13 yo blind dog, trapped in a window well. Buddy had been missing for 5 days. Because Buddy was licensed with @CityofEP, we were able to contact Buddy’s owners and reunite them quickly. Please license your dog.

Be aware that Hwy. 212 and Hwy. 5 are very slick. We have responded to several crashes on both highways this morning. We are working with MNDOT to get more salt and sand on those roads, but it may be wise to avoid 212 and 5 for a while. https://t.co/6gsQnrJN9T

The EPPD and the Super Bowl

As you may have heard, Super Bowl 52 is coming to Minnesota Feb. 4. The EPPD has been preparing for this event for the past two years and is ready to welcome visitors to our community, while at the same time maintaining our customer service commitment to our residents.

In order to manage the demands that the Super Bowl will bring to Eden Prairie, we will be fully staffed — no officers were granted vacation in the days surrounding the Super Bowl. We also provided training to our officers on providing security during metrowide events.

While meeting with representatives from the NFL, federal, state, county and law enforcement agencies from across the Twin Cities, our department developed plans to manage potential public safety situations in two key locations — the Minnesota Vikings Winter Park facility and Flying Cloud Airport.

One of the teams playing in the Super Bowl will use Winter Park as a training facility Jan. 29–Feb. 2. As a result, there will be road closures that week in the surrounding area. Click here (http://www.edenprairie.org/Home/Components/News/News/3940/28?backlist=%2f) for more details and a map. Road closure and detour information will be posted along roadways two weeks in advance.

At Flying Cloud Airport, we anticipate an increase in air traffic as visitors arrive. In response, we will provide enhanced security at the airport in the days before and after the Super Bowl. That area could also see additional motor vehicle traffic and we will respond accordingly.

Human Trafficking Awareness Month

January is recognized as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in the United States. For past two years, the EPPD has made human trafficking prevention and enforcement one of our top priorities.

Investigators from Eden Prairie collaborate with law enforcement personnel from Bloomington, Richfield, Minnetonka, Plymouth and Maple Grove as part of the “494 Corridor Group” with the goal to investigate crimes related to human trafficking along Interstate 494. In 2017 that group conducted seven stings in the five member communities that resulted in 38 arrests and the recovery of 17 victims.

In the past year we also assisted with a high-profile case that started in Washington County and centered on a home on Lake Minnetonka. EPPD investigators assisted with the surveillance of the residence and provided digital forensics analysis. After four months of investigation, the suspect pled guilty to racketeering and sex trafficking and will serve 22 years in prison.

We have been fortunate to have several community groups donate funding and supplies for comfort kits for human trafficking victims that include basic necessities such as food, clothing, gas cards, person hygiene products and hand-knit hats.

If you or someone you know is being sexually exploited or trafficked please call 911 or Safe Harbor’s Day One Hotline at 1-866-223-1111.

Dog Rescue

As you may have seen on @KARE11 this week, a 13-year-old blind dog named Buddy survived five nights in the frigid cold while trapped in a neighboring home’s window well in Eden Prairie. The homeowner noticed the dog on Monday afternoon and immediately contacted a neighbor who called the EPPD.

Community Service Officer April Ehmke arrived on the scene and crawled into the window well to pull the dog to safety. CSO Ehmke noticed that the dog was wearing an identification collar with Buddy’s name and a phone number. While attempting to reach the owners, CSO Ehmke brought Buddy to an emergency veterinarian to get checked out. After being released from the vet, Buddy and his owners were reunited at the EPPD.

The EPPD would like to use this story to stress the importance of making sure your dog is wearing current identification at all times. Without Buddy’s identification tag, it would have been much more difficult to find his owner.

The City requires that all dogs ages six months or older be licensed with the City. Licenses are issued for a two-year cycle, with the next cycle ending Dec. 31, 2018. Licenses purchased in 2018 are prorated and only cost $10. Those licenses still expire Dec. 31, 2018. Licenses can be purchased by mail or in person at City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road. Click here for a dog license application.

Dogs without a license or ID are transported to the animal shelter in Bloomington where impounding and boarding fees are charged. Last year the EPPD received 354 reports of dogs at large.

We are happy that Buddy is safely back at home and encourage all dog owners to license their dogs so we can help facilitate more happy endings.

The Eden Prairie Police Department is working closely with the National Football League and officials at the Minnesota Vikings Winter Park facility (9520 Viking Dr.) to prepare for Super Bowl 52. Increased traffic congestion and road closures could affect a number of businesses located in Eden Prairie’s golden triangle, near the border of Eden Prairie and Edina.

Here is what you need to know:

– In conjunction with Super Bowl 52, National Football League teams will be using the Minnesota Vikings Winter Park facility Jan. 29 – Feb. 2, 2018.

– The intersection of Viking Drive and Washington Avenue will be closed while teams are at the practice facility – see map for details: http://www.edenprairie.org/home/showdocument?id=9859

– Commuters should make plans to use the north end of Washington Avenue, accessible from Highway 169 & Valley View Road.

– Traffic congestion and detours are expected and employees should plan accordingly when setting work schedules and meetings, as well as notify visitors and delivery drivers, etc.

– Road closure and detour information will be posted along roadways two weeks in advance.

We will work diligently to keep road closures to a minimum and quickly restore the flow of traffic. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for ongoing updates regarding Super Bowl 52 operations at Winter Park.
