On January 10 at approximately 11:00pm, Officer Greg Martin observed a white Hyundai Elantra commit a traffic violation. Officer Martin attempted to stop the vehicle on Taft St. The vehicle continued to drive before pulling over near the Taft St. boat ramp. The driver of the vehicle, Justin Acosta(41) of 545 Pine St. Central Falls, immediately got out of the vehicle and began approaching Officer Martin in an aggressive way. Officer Martin ordered Acosta to get back into his vehicle at which time Acosta turned and ran down the boat ramp and jumped into the Blackstone River. Officer Martin notified dispatch to request a rescue boat. Acosta swam to the middle of the river and grabbed a floating piece of ice. Acosta refused to come to shore and began shouting, “Just let me kill myself”. Officers deployed rescue buoys into the water near Acosta and were able to convince Acosta to grab the buoys. Acosta was pulled to shore where he was placed into custody. Acosta was transported to RI Hospital to be checked.

Acosta was charged with Resisting Arrest and Driving with a Suspended License. A check of Acosta showed that he had 5 active arrest warrants and was to be considered “Armed and dangerous”. They are as follows:

On December 29 2017 at approximately 7:00pm the Pawtucket Police responded to Royal Fried Chicken at 270 Dexter St. for a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival officers observed a male victim(43) laying on the floor bleeding from a laceration to his face. The victim was also extremely confused and disoriented and could not remember what happened to him. Witnesses on scene stated that a black male with long curly hair was in the restaurant yelling and acting belligerently. The victim asked the male to stop yelling and was punched several times in the face by the suspect. The suspect continued to punch the victim after he fell to the ground and slammed his head on the ground. A patron tried to intervene and the male stomped on the victim’s head before leaving the establishment. The victim was transported to RI Hospital where he was treated and released for the laceration and possible concussion.

Detective Robert Cardente was able to obtain a video of the assault and put pictures of the suspect on the departments Facebook page. Thanks to several tips from the public, Det. Cardente was able to identify the suspect as Richard Lee King(33) of 8 Benefit St. 3rd Fl Providence. King was arrested on January 10 by Detective Cardente and is being charged with Felony Assault and Disorderly Conduct. King will be arraigned this morning at Providence District Court.
