Richard Renteria was taken into custody just before 1:00 am. APD developed information Renteria was inside a residence in the 2500 block of South 18th. A surveillance perimeter was established until the SWAT team arrived.

Once on scene SWAT members attempted to establish contact with Renteria. Renteria subsequently broke out a rear window of the house, jumped into the back yard and fired a shot, however he had unknowingly dropped the magazine from his weapon while exiting the window. This only allowed one shot to be fired from his weapon.

Renteria dropped his handgun and attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested after a short foot chase. The handgun, shell casing, and magazine were recovered.

No shots were fired by APD personnel.

He will be charged with aggravated assault stemming from the shooting yesterday morning.

It is possible Renteria could also face additional charges including Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer and Evading Arrest pending the outcome of the investigation.

Personnel from CID, Special Operations, Patrol, along with SWAT all participated in the investigation which began just before 4:00 am yesterday.
