The Harrisonburg Police Department would like to recognize two local businesses that have worked hard in 2017 to promote HPD community events. Sgt Charles Grubbs of the Community Resource Unit presented Shenandoah Joe Coffee and Shenandoah Bicycle Company with certificates of appreciation and commended them for their ongoing efforts. Partnerships that HPD has with local businesses are valuable to public safety and we appreciate all they do for Harrisonburg!

HPD Recognized for 2017 National Night Out

National Night Out is the first Tuesday in August every year, where the Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) along with community members get together to run crime out of the city. 2017 was not different, as the Harrisonburg Police Department along with members from the Virginia State Police, and James Madison University Police Department traveled to five communities to help build trust and relationships.
According to National Associations of Town Watch over 16,377 communities registered and participated in National Night Out. From those communities that participated 181 received awards for their commitment and dedication to the community they serve.
The Harrisonburg Police Department was recently awarded one of those awards for the outstanding participation. Sgt. Grubbs stated, “While it is truly and honor to be recognized, this award goes to the community and volunteers who sponsor the events.”.
“National Night Out is about bringing communities to help develop and foster positive relationships.”

HPD wants the community to stay safe and sound during this period of extreme cold temperatures in the valley. Cold winter weather in our area can be dangerous. Here are some tips for your home:

• Weather-proof doors and windows to trap heat inside your home.

• Plug portable heaters directly into wall outlets, not extension cords or power strips. Keep space heaters at least three feet from other objects. Never leave a space heater unattended, and turn it off before going to bed.

• Make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors are working.

• Prepare for possible power outages by charging devices, making sure generators are working, and identifying where you will go for heat.

• Insulate pipes with newspaper and let faucet drip to prevent pipes from freezing.

• Make sure you know how to shut off water valves in case pipes burst.

• Do not use the kitchen oven range to heat your home. In addition to being a fire hazard, it can be a source of toxic fumes.

• Check and restock your emergency preparedness kit. If you don’t have a kit, make one. Learn more about making a plan for winter weather and all emergencies at www.ReadyVirginia.gov.
