Happy Friday followers!! With the start of every new year, we look back over the past 12 months to see what was accomplished and what we did as an agency to improve our services to the community and continue our commitment to you as a premier agency in the area. Today we will take a shapshot review of our parking and traffic units.

For 2017, the goals for the unit were as follows:
1. Create and facilitate an intermediate driving class for Auburn area students.
2. Provide and support 20 hours per month towards DUI detection and enforcement.
3. Provide and support the public with professional/modern resources for collision investigation.

Results:
1. The traffic unit worked with AT&T and the Washington State Traffic Commission and created an Intermediate Driving School which was hosted 4 times during the summer of 2017. Over 100 drivers attended the class. The class was also featured on KOMO 4 News and was highly commended.

2. Officers in the department had over 200 hours of scheduled Impaired Driver Enforcement Emphasis and, as a department, 192 impaired drivers were arrested.

3. The traffic unit obtained two UAV devices and used these for major collision investigations. These devices allow the unit to complete an investigation in 1/3 of the time of the old technology and provided much more accurate depictions of the collision scene. Sadly, the department investigated 6 fatality collisions in 2017.

Generally speaking, in terms of performance, the department issued 11,483 infractions with a majority of the infractions being for distracted driving, speed and driving without insurance.

The department investigated 1,610 collisions. ***Did you know that 43% of our collisions take place between 2 and 7pm? What are you people doing out there???

Officers were involved in 41 pursuits in 2017 and 13 suspects were apprehended and charged with Felony Eluding.

The department received over $75,000 in traffic grant funds in 2017 which were used to perform emphasis patrols as well as create educational videos and materials that were used for traffic safety classes for adult and intermediate students.

The parking unit handled 5,551 incidents resulting in the issuance of 3, 777 infractions as well as the impoundment of 436 vehicles.

WHEW!!! Welcome to 2018 everyone. Please drive safely out there. We would love to see all these numbers go lower..well except the grant money!
